2006 SHORELINE CLEANUP

The Oldman Watershed Council once again participated in the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This year's cleanup was held at the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre area.

The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is part of an international effort to clean Canada's shorelines. Held every September, this cleanup event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), in which 120 countries, including Canada, participate.

In Canada, the Shoreline Cleanup began in 1994 in Vancouver, and by 2002, the event had spread Canada wide. Cleanups occur along the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic Oceans, along the Great Lakes, and Saint-Lawrence Seaway, and along numerous prairie rivers and lakes, including the Oldman River.

This year, our most common item was cigarette butts, however like last year, we found many food wrappers. Other interesting items we found included a shopping cart, pins from the High Level Bridge, scrap metal, and a large glass jar.
