The Oldman River Basin Water Quality Initiative was recognized in 2001 with the Special Emerald Award, presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation for Environmental Excellence, for the Initiative's progress in involving a range of stakeholders to address water quality concerns that are important to all those involved, despite diverse backgrounds and interests. The Foundation recognizes Albertans who demonstrate their commitment to protect, preserve, enhance and sustain our environment.

"It is a great honour just being nominated for this award," said Dr. Paul Hasselback, (then) Chair of the Initiative, "but receiving this recognition speaks highly of all the stakeholders involved. All partners in the Initiative should be proud of this special award recognizing their commitment to understand and protect water quality in the Oldman River Basin."
