HOLDING THE REINS 2008
On January 22, 2008, the Rural Team hosted their 2nd annual Holding
the Reins:
Landowners Summit for the Oldman Watershed. This year’s workshop was held at
the Fort Macleod and District Community Hall.
Highlights of the day include having Shawn Patience, the Mayor of Fort
Macleod welcome us, followed by presentations on:
- Recreation and Sustainability – Quad Squad
- Forest Management Plans after the Lost Creek and Pole Haven Fires –
Michael
Alexander, Rangeland Management Forester, SRD.
- Innovative Watering and the Importance of Water Quality – Joe
Harrington,
Agriculture Water Specialist, AFRD.
- Gas Industry’s Perspective on Industry Best Management Practices –
Kurtis
Averill, Compton Representative/ Steven Tannas, PhD Student at the
University
of Alberta.
- Chief Mountain Cumulative Effects Study Results – Barry Wilson,
Silvatech
Consulting.
- Nutrient Beneficial Management Practice Evaluation Project – Andrea
Kalischuck, Agri-Environmental Systems Section Lead, Alberta Agriculture
and
Food.
- Landowner and Watershed Stewardship Group Updates – Castle Crown,
Bee
Hive Association, Livingston Landowners Group, SALTS, and the South
Porcupine Stewardship Association.
- The Blackfoot Challenge: Partnerships Building our Future – Jim
Stone, Rancher and Chairman of the Blackfoot Challenge/ Greg Neudecker,
US Fish and Wildlife Service.
The day ended off with an excellent dinner and a presentation from our
keynote speaker, Dr. Stewart Rood, University of Lethbridge.
